Remarks & Notes
Pictured in its last winter season as a Great Lakes (via NYC north of Cincinnati) to Miami (via Seaboard Air Line south of Jacksonville) coach-Pullman train, Southern's northbound "Florida Sunbeam" pulls Nickajack Hill out of Atlanta--bound for Chattanooga and Cincinnati. The 12 heavyweights--which include a mix of Southern and NYC cars ahead of the Pullmans--are being pulled by a green and off-white passenger-geared F3 A-B set--a favorite for such service at the time, particularly in the mountains. The "Sunbeam" made its first seasonal runs in 1936, was annulled two seasons during WWII, and ended this particular (and last) season on April 30, 1949. The next season, the all-streamlined "New Royal Palm" (not to be confused with the year-round "Royal Palm") became Southern's winter season Midwest-Florida train. The handwriting was on the wall, however, and Southern threw in the towel on its Florida winter season trains with the last run of the "New Royal Palm" on April 30, 1955. This original photo was taken by the late Dick Sharpless--a talented photographer who captured many great railroad scenes in the Atlanta area in the '40s and '50s.
