| Beginning in 1992 by NS as a program to remanufacture its aging coal hopper fleet into higher capacity assets, the Top Gon rebuilds were constructed for NS by the Roanoke East Shops to a tune of 18,000 cars total with each car having a new capacity of 105 tons. With their capacity the highest at that time for Norfolk Southern, it’s no wonder that an NS employee decided to call these cars “Top Gons”. |
