Q582 emerges from the north end of the tunnel through Cumberland Mountain near Cowan, TN. This tunnel was completed in 1852 before the Nashville and Chattanooga rail line got here. The first train ran through the tunnel in February 1853 and the tunnel has been in continuous use ever since. This picture was taken from a bridge that was part of the "Mountain Goat" branch line that ran from Cowan to Tracy City, TN, and then to the coal fields beyond.
Not only known as Music City, USA, Nashville served as a major junction for the Louisville and Nashville, Tennessee Central, and Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis as well as through service for a host of other railroads.
