The northbound L&N Southland--a Tampa/St. Pete to the Midwest train handled by the L&N between Cincinnati and Atlanta--swings off the NC&StL main line at Cartersville onto the "New Line" to Etowah and points north. The fireman has come over to snag a Clearance Form "A" and any Form 19 orders and/or messages from the Junta Tower operator. The lead unit is a veteran E6, but one of the L&N's four newer E8s trails. The engineer will have the benefit of the second unit's full tractive capabilities since it has automatic transition in reverse. The E6s and E7s did not. (photo by the late David Salter)
