Here's another fine shot from my collection, this one taken by the late Hank Stuart, Jr. This is N&W's daily Clinch Valley District passenger local number 5, arriving from Bluefield. During the short layover at Norton, Pacific 578 will be turned on the short turntable, and the train will return as number 6 in time to connect with the eastbound Cavalier at Bluefield, WV. The connection track dropping down the hill was for L&N and N&W freight engines (which would have included 2-8-4s on the former and 2-8-8-2s on the latter) to access the Interstate wye for turning. This track was removed at the end of steam. The 578 survives at the Ohio Railway Museum, but it hasn't been in operable condition in many decades. Nos. 5 and 6 were dieselized in 1958, and discontinued the following year.
