The Great Allegheny Passage. Western Maryland 734 charges eastbound, off the Alt. Rte. 40 Bridge in Lavale, MD, on a murky fall morning. The segment of the former Western Maryland Connellsville Sub from Cumberland to Frostburg is now the route of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. Running in parallel with the railroad is a biking and hiking "rail-trail" known as the Great Allegheny Passage. Unlike the railroad, the trail doesn't end in Frostburg. It runs for a total of 141 miles, all the way from Cumberland, MD to Homestead, PA. The trail is ultimately planned to extend all the way to Pittsburgh, and when connected to the C&O Canal Tow-Path trail in Cumberland, the result will be a 300+ mile long, motor-vehicle-free path from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington, DC.
