Remarks & Notes
Emergency Room. Memorial Day wasn't a shining moment for this steam excursion star. On the previous day, UP 844 suffered bearing problems shortly after leaving Marysville, Kansas. With the help of the Mopac heritage unit, UP 1982, the steam team was able to limp the northern into Kansas City at a reduced speed of 30 miles per hour. The engine pulled into Union Station over 3 hours late. As soon as they arrived, the crew was busy disassembling the running gear on the engineer's side of the locomotive. The next morning brought more hard work as the crew replaced the bad bearing. Note the main rod of the locomotive sitting on the ground next to the 844. Despite the lack of a shop building (and under the watchful eyes of steam fans), the crew got the job done before the 844 was to leave the next day. Also, note the BNSF freight stopped at a red signal on the track in the background.
