Remarks & Notes |
Because of a derailment on Donner Pass which ended up closing both mainlines for a couple of days, the Union Pacific stack trains were detoured to their original route through the Feather River Canyon. Here you see the detoured ZG2LT being led by UP 4109 through the colorful Serpentine Canyon. This train will continue to battle a 1% grade all the way through the Feather River Canyon.
Since November of 2009, the stack trains have been routed via Donner Pass. Only rarely when something goes wrong on Donner Pass will you see the stack trains back on the original Western Pacific route. I got lucky as I was heading up for the Feather River Express and these detours just seem to fall right in front of me. |
