Early riser. Engineer Dan Markoff, clad in his signature black derby and leather vest, leans out the cab window of his beautiful "Eureka" as he takes a passenger extra west to Cascade just after sunrise. This photo was taken during the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad's annual Railfest event in 2010. Built in 1875, the Eureka has been a frequent visitor to Railfest in recent years and is the only wood-burning 4-4-0 that still hauls wilderness excursions with paying passengers. As unique as she looks, Eureka actually does have a couple of surviving Baldwin-built sisters, although unfortunately, neither is able to "get around" on their own these days. One example is North Pacific Coast Railroad #12 "Sonoma", which is now prominently displayed at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. If you happen to visit the CSRM, you'll find that little Sonoma is the spittin' image of Eureka.
