2009 Center for Railroad Photography and Art Gold winner. Note from the judges:
The photographer captures the essence of a heavy freight train shattering the quietude of the wee hours in a small Appalachian town, in this image of a CSX loaded coal train passing through Piedmont, West Virginia, on November 3, 2007. The interplay of streetlights and shadows, combined with the lack of human presence, heightens the sense of isolation. By photographing not the nose of the lead locomotive, but instead the trailing locomotive and first car, the photographer added tension to the composition, while also capturing more exhaust and hinting at the train's purpose.
A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
