Remarks & Notes |
The late Jim Carter (1937-2011) was that most unusual of railway photographers in that he was also a working footplate railwayman. His job allowed him vantage points and perspectives seldom permitted to the average enthusiast. His abiding love for the locomotives and the railway scene in general is captured in his photographs. We are indeed fortunate that his unique images survive to 'tell it like it was' for future generations. His home depot was Patricroft on the western approaches to Manchester where this fine image of smart 'Black 5' 44767 was captured as she hauls a dead BR 'Standard' 4-6-0 from the running shed that is seen in the background. 44767 was one of the 842 Blak Fives that were experimentally modified, uniquely being fitted with Stephenson Valve gear instead of the conventional Walschaerts. Fortunately she survived and is preserved in running order The incredible complexity of the railway scene in those days is very evident and deserves more than a casual glance to appreciate fully. RIP Jim. |
