UP 305,CNW 5057,UP 2863,3198,2816 scream east with 80 cars a few miles out of the big yard at North Platte. The 305 was just roaring and I figure she would toss her cookies at any time as I gave chase on US-30. Never happened while I was able to keep pace and the train slowly left me in its wake. 305 was listed as retired on 3/27/81 so the old girl had a few more overland route trips still in her future. UP normally placed one of there own units on the point of trains east of North Platte due to some signal requirements. Most anything could be used but often it was something older on the roster and the unit would quickly be cut off at either Fremont or Omaha/Council Bluffs and the run-through train would continue on with a home road unit on the point. Note how the CNW GP50 is properly positioned to lead after the arrival at Fremont in this trains case.
