| Brakey - Brakeman Dave Dobbs prepares to alight from coach #256 bringing up the rear of the five car "chase train" which took the hole here at Glacier so that the rotary fleet could pull up on the siding for water and then head north leading the way toward the summit. The White Pass & Yukon's "rotary fleet" consisted of vintage snowplow #3 (Cooke - 1899) trailed by twin steam locomotives #73 (Baldwin 2-8-2 blt. 5-47) and #69 (Baldwin 2-8-0 blt. 4-07) and coach 211. The coach from which brakeman Dobbs is stepping off of is very interesting in its own right. Built new for the WP&Y in 1936 by PC&F it was the first all steel passenger car on the railroad. Named "Lake LeBarge," it is known to all as the "Queen's Car" since in 1962 her Royal Highness Elizabeth II rode in this car while on a tour of the western part of the Dominion. Her picture aboard the car adorns two framed photos proudly displayed within. |
