| The Grand Crossing interlocking seemed to be prone to dense fog in the mornings especially in the fall. It had been one of those days on the morning of Sept. 22, 1979 and Milwaukee 2030,2011 were on a westbound ballast train when they overshot the stop signal and plowed into the side of a westbound BN COFC train that was sitting on the diamond while the crew was changing at N. La Crosse yard. Damage was minor as it was a perfect hit right in the middle of a 89' COFC flat and the 2030 just pushed it onto its side. No Track damage resulted and after the one derailed car was cleared away the BN train was put back together and continued west. The Milwaukee units rest in the yard just east of Grand Crossing tower late in the evening after the collision. |
