| The Ex DSS&A line from Trout Lake to St. Ignace and the Chief Wawatum connection was never long on traffic after the 60's. Service was mostly a trip a week or so in the early to mid 70's. That all changed for a couple of years when Michigan Northern took over operation of the Ex PRR line from Comstock Park(near Grand Rapids) to Mackinaw City. The short line was aggressive in trying to get traffic and flagged out on a general rate increase(back when the RR's were almost regulated like utilities). This caused an unbelievable amount of lumber traffic from the western US to be routed through the St. Ignace gateway as the lumber shippers were not worried about delays, only about costs. At one time I was told by the agent that worked the Trout Lake station that 400 cars bound via MN were backed up on the Soo Line between Minneapolis and Sault Ste. Marie. In any case the Chief Wawatum had one last moment in the sun as it was operating non stop at the time. This shot has Soo 4425 working hard to move 54 loads of western lumber to St. Ignace to ride the venerable carferry across the Straits of Mackinac. |
