Remarks & Notes
A matched set of Rio Grande GP30's work industrial trackage at the Geneva Steel mill in Vineyard, Utah. The 3007, 3022, & 3001 were more than 30 years old when captured on Kodachrome 25 in this view facing northward on the east side of the plant. At left, the three tallest structures visible are the blast furnaces and out of view in the distance are the basic oxygen furnaces (QBOP) and the open hearth that together made this industrial age 'smokestack' industry a sight to see. By 2001 the show at Geneva was over and the mill was shut down for good. What seems most remarkable today is that absolutely nothing in this photo exists: the Rio Grande GP30's, the steel mill structures, and the miles of plant railroad trackage are gone. Today's barren, empty landscape awaits redevelopment when the economy improves and investors move to bring new life to the property...most likely without any need for rail service.
