Remarks & Notes
Originally introduced as a Petrol Electric Rail Motor (PERM) in 1928, the first railmotor was built by the St. Louis Car Company and exported to Australia, with Victorian Railways building a further nine. They were originally powered by a Winton petrol engine of 220 hp which was replaced by twin GM 6 cylinder diesel engines with a total of 255 bhp in 1952 to become a Diesel Electric Rail Motor (DERM). The last were withdrawn from service in 1991 and a number are preserved. 58RM belongs to the DERM Preservation Association Victoria and is based at Newport.
