Remarks & Notes |
The Name Says It All! - The aptly named Aqua Train is owned and operated by CN to provide interchange service with the Alaska Railroad. CN owns the barge and loads it at Prince Rupert, BC. They contract with Foss Maritime whose tugs make the three day one way journey up the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska. The 8 track barge can carry in excess of 50 cars depending on length and arrives in Whittier every 10 days. To learn a little more about this service click here to visit CN’s official page. In this view the tug Barbara Foss is slowly inching the lightly loaded barge in towards the ARR's slip just out of sight to the right. It is a typical cloudy day, but the glacial blue water of Prince William Sound is exceptionally calm making the tug's job seemingly effortless. No matter how many times I see this there is just something fascination about a "floating train."Note: the photographer is a railroad employee with permission to be on the property and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph. |
