Remarks & Notes
The Name Says It All! - The aptly named Aqua Train is owned and operated by CN to provide interchange service with the Alaska Railroad. CN owns the barge and loads it at Prince Rupert, BC. They contract with Foss Maritime whose tugs make the three day one way journey up the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska. The 8 track barge can carry in excess of 50 cars depending on length and arrives in Whittier every 10 days. To learn a little more about this service click here to visit CNs official page. In this view from the slip we can see it being slowly eased into position. Notice the chocking and lashing arrangement to secure the cars and also note the two "switches" on the deck. This odd arrangement means that tracks 1 and 2 at the right are shorter and it is designed this way due to the docking face in Prince Rupert. The clouds are hanging low over the calm blue waters of Prince William Sound and if you look to the left of the covered hopper you can see Billings Glacier snaking its way down from the Chugach Mountains. Note: the photographer is a railroad employee with permission to be on the property and was wearing all required PPE while taking this photograph.
