Amtrak train 11, heading south ("east" on the Southern Pacific) on the SP's Salinas Sub, the Coast Starlight, passes through the pastures of Cal Poly University (which has an extensive agricultural program). Two-month old SDP40Fs 583 and 587 are in charge of this train as it travels along the nearby Pacific Ocean (and thus the overcast skies in July!) from Seattle to Los Angeles.
The cattle, or at least one of them, seems more interested in me than the train. And another seems more interested in … well … another cow. Look even more closely, and you can find a hawk looking for prey above the rear of the lead locomotive. Gotta love California's Central Coast! (San Luis Obispo, California – July 2, 1974)
