Remarks & Notes
Ghost Railroading - Hawaii Style The Hawaii Consolidated Railway has been gone for nearly 65 years (abandoned in 1946 following a devastating Tsunami), but relics can still be found if one knows where to look. Originally chartered in 1899 as the Hilo Railroad., at its peak it had just over 100 miles of standard gauge trackage on the Big Island of Hawaii. The spectacularly rugged line north from Hilo along the Hamakua Coast was begin in 1908 and not completed until 1913 although it was only 33.5 miles long. This route cost 3.5 million dollars to build (or just over $106K per mile) and drove the railroad into bankruptcy. Reorganized as the HCR it ran moderately successfully for a 33 years. This view looks south at what was arguably the most spectacular site on a line full of superlatives. Here in front of you once stood a 1006 ft long 144 ft high steel trestle on a 6 degree curve. Immediately at the south end of the bridge the rails plunged into the 2007 ft long Maulua Tunnel the longest of three on the railroad.
