While it appears that these GATX workers are applying lettering to a box car, this Linde / Union Carbide car is actually a tank car (AAR class XT - a tank inside a box car, used to carry liquified gases). Inside the box car body is a tank for transporting liquified oxygen. Built in February 1952, these distinctive green cars were a common sight at Southern Pacific's West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California. This car had an LAPX reporting mark, which was a GATX mark for cars leased to Linde. Even as late as 1978, there is still a lot of hand work involved in applying the lettering to this car.
