The September 13, 1986 Bluegrass Railroad Museum sponsored Southern Steam Special ran from Lexington, Ky to Chattanooga, Tn, a distance of about 250 miles. Norfolk & Western Class J 4-8-4 611 was the power for this two day trip. N&W 611 was built by N&W in 1950 at Roanoke. She has 70 inch drivers, boiler pressure of 300 lbs, 27 x 32 inch Cylinders, and can deliver 80,000 pounds of tractive effort. In a great display of smoke and steam, N&W 611 leaves Chattanooga on Sunday, September 14, 1986 on the return trip to Lexington, Ky.
