The evening commute is in full swing as three trains are passing by “Dock” tower and through the Passaic River bridge. The tower, which was fully manned up until just a few years ago controlled the complicated interlocking into and through both sides of Newark Penn Station which is just past the bridge. PATH’s tracks are on the upper level of the station and they cross the river on the double-deck lift bridge on the left side. The ground level tracks belong to Amtrak and are normally used for eastbound traffic heading to New York. The right side bridge is also the same lift design, but only carries the ground level westbound Amtrak rails. The near PATH train is moving up the ramp and will soon cross the bridge and be at Penn Station while the far PATH train has just departed the station. NJ Transit is a tenant on these tracks and during rush hour I don’t think there is more than a 2 minute gap between trains and when you add in the PATH trains, multiple train captures are common.
