Remarks & Notes |
A hopper train arrives just in time to capture a late afternoon scene of downtown Roanoke. Both yellow brick buildings were once N&W offices and the Tudor-style building behind them is the Hotel Roanoke, built in 1882 by the N&W. The stacks and sign at upper right are part of NS's Roanoke Shops and the city's "Railwalk" can be seen at far right. Although this shot was taken from the Gainsborough/2nd Street bridge, NS still refers to the location as "Commerce Street" for the grade crossing that was here prior to the bridge's construction. See photo 211941 for an April 1999 view from the same location. |
