Probably my favorite railroad subject was chasing and photographing Interlake (Acme) Steel's "Thermos Bottle" trains. These unusual trains ran on various routes over the years, between Interlake Steel's South Chicago Furnace Plant along the east bank of the Calumet River, and the Riverdale Works, 10 rail miles away, on the Little Calumet River at Acme Bend in Riverdale, my hometown. Pictured here, an empty Bottle Train pulled by Conrail GP38 7907 heads eastward on the Indiana Harbor Belt. I am standing on the Torrence Avenue overpass in Calumet City, IL. Just out of sight, behind the trees, is the Little Calumet River. The tracks on the right belong to the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad, which parallels the IHB from Calumet City to 'DU' Interlocking Tower in Dolton.
