Several years ago one could see Norfolk Southern's (or Southern's) River Street Rambler freight train rolling along the cobblestone River Street in Savannah. In 2004 the City purchased the trackage from NS and as of early 2009 operates this streetcar back and forth on the one mile corridor along the Savannah River carrying shoppers, tourists and visitors. The streetcar is a 1930s era car that originally operated in Melbourne, Australia before being purchased by the City and restored into a modern bio-diesel rail car.
