Remarks & Notes
A pair of GE locomotives lead a grain train west along the Great Salt Lake at Ellerbeck, Utah. One of the commercially viable industries along America's 'Dead Sea' is the extraction of minerals. Visible here along the northwest shoreline are several salt evaporation ponds at Solar. In the distance is Stansbury Island, a group of mountains that qualify as an 'island' only rarely when the water level is high. Union Pacific's Shafter Subdivision between Smelter, Utah and Alazon, Nevada was part of the former Western Pacific which officially merged into the UP system in 1983.
