In the 1980's Randfontein Estates Gold Mine (REGM), west of Johannesburg, became well known in the railfan community for its rail system operated by ex- SAR class GMA 4-8-2 + 2-8-4 garratts. The garratts were replaced by diesels in January 1995 and today the former REGM mine is owned by Rand Uranium, with the rail system being operated entirely on their behalf by Sheltam. One of their newest locomotives, imported from GE Brazil, is hauling 10 empty ore hoppers from Cooke Plant to the loading point at Millsite, seen against the backdrop of the massive tailings dump that is being processed to extract the remaining gold and manufacture uranium.
