Remarks & Notes
This is an example of one of those shots that you plan for one thing to happen and then something completely different comes along…and makes it better!
For a long time I had wanted to document the signal arrangement at Hobart Junction in Los Angeles. I was fascinated in the way the signals all seemed to fit together and over lap in such an interesting and graphic way but I could never come up with the missing element that would bring it all together. I thought I’d give the location a try at night and see what would happen. I made several attempts at different compositions as BNSF and Amtrak trains passed me from the east and from the west, but nothing seemed to be really that interesting. Then just as I was about to give up and leave, a set of Union Pacific locomotive comes trundling southward across the diamond in a slow but forceful manor. I knew the shutter was to slow to freeze the passing locos, but what the heck, I squeezed of a few frames anyway.
Receiving the film back from the lab the next day, this one single image jumped of the light table at me and turned my evening of disappointment into one of unexpected success. This shot went on to earn an honorable mention in the Center for Railroad Photography and Art’s photo competition in November of 2003.
