Remarks & Notes
L&N No. 865 makes a morning arrival in Appalachia, passing an Interstate crew heading down to the transloader with a full train of run-of-mine coal. The aluminum car on the right is one of two experimental Southern "Big Dropper" air dumps for coal hauling. "Double Cut" was originally named for the L&N and SR mains on the left. It replaced a single track tunnel (L&N's) in the early 20th Century. The third track (car storage) was added when the cut was expanded in 1966, during construction of the transloader--but the location was not called "Triple Cut" thereafter.
