Cogscape - Long Trestle. Perhaps no other spot on the Mt. Washington Cog Railway shows off the altitude gained by the trains better than Long Trestle at 5300 MSL. Here, as we face northwest, we can see that the terrain drops off precipitously...about 1800 ft...into Burt's Ravine below. In this photo, #9 powers up the grade at a stately 4 mph, with her Fireman putting in scoops of coal at 30 second intervals. The Brakeman on the front platform watches the track intently. A derailment here would not be good. Folks who have a fear of heights should definitely avoid the left side of the train.
