| The 488 with a Cumbres turn really smokes it up as it climbs the final 4 percent around Windy Point to the pass. As was normal practice, a helper is cut in ahead of the caboose in the distance. Typically two Cumbres turns would be made with two (or before 1959 three) engines. The following morning a third cut would be hauled up the hill and then a 70 car train put together behind one engine for the long downhill run from Cumbres to Alamosa. |
