Blaenau Ffestiniog sits without but completely surrounded by the Snowdonia National Park, due to the scars from its industrial past of slate quarrying, and the various waste heaps. Not quite the seven hills of Rome, but 'Stiniog has a certain charm of its own. 37401 and 37417 “Richard Trevithick” approach Blaenau tunnel (which I’m standing directly over, and its portal just visible at the bottom of the shot) with Kingfisher Railtours’ return “The Welsh Mountaineer” 1Z74 16.15 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Grantham. The embankment on which the photographers are standing once carried a tramway across the extant railway to another slate waste dump on the other side. In the far distance can be seen the twin reactors of the decommissioned Trawsfynydd nuclear power station. On the right is the Harlech Dome (a mountain range), and other mountains within the Snowdonia National Park can be seen beyond.
