Remarks & Notes |
Conrail SD80MACs at Roanoke for locomotive adhesion testing on Norfolk Southern during November of 1998. The blue barrells are full of water and connected to hoses that spray the head of the rail for "wet rail testing". NS tested this pair of SD80MACs and a pair of CR 2500 series SD70Ms (built to NS specifications) on Starkey Hill, a steep grade with tight curves going south out of Roanoke on the Winston-Salem District. Each pair pulled multiple trains up the hill to determine the maximum tonnage they could handle under varying conditions and data was monitored and recorded from research car NS 32, placed between the engines and train. Tonnage was increased or decreased by adding or subtracting loads of coal. |
