I call this stretch of railroad California's hidden coast. For about 50 miles, except for the railroad itself and the station at Surf, it is isolated from public access by mountains, Vandenberg Air Force Base, and private land. The views from the Coast Starlight are spectacular. One of the few points of access is Jalama Beach County Park, at the end of miles of narrow twisting road, and where this picture was taken.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
