Remarks & Notes
Union Pacific GP30 875 is a bit different than UP GP30 705, coupled behind it. Originally built in July 1961 as EMD GP22 demonstrator 5629, this engine was later rebuilt into EMD GP30 demonstrator 1962. When EMD was done demonstrating it, EMDX 1962 was sold to Union Pacific, becoming UP 875. Note the three most obvious differences: the unusual blower bulge behind the cab, the "GP9-style" classification lights on the nose and the numerous oval cutouts in the side sill and under the walkway. There are also a number of smaller differences in the grilles, access doors, hand brake, fans, access doors and that vertical pipe between the first and second stanchions on along the hood. In fact, this looks quite a bit like the old, now hard-to-find Athearn GP30 from about 1962! (Colton, California - April 27, 1978)
