Remarks & Notes
Southern Pacific's only bright red caboose, C-40-6 class number 1741, is seen here on the rear of SP 9181 west as it descends the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains at Woodford, not far from the town of Tehachapi, California, on December 2nd, 1979. SP 1741 was painted bright red (with gray roof, platforms and trucks) in 1972 as a test, but the color didn't handle the accumulation of dirt and dust well (as can be seen here), and remained the only SP caboose so painted.
