Remarks & Notes

The NS 8104 Lehigh Valley leads the weekly limestone run into Belews Creek. At the end of the train the manned pushers or helpers can be seen at the top of the hill. Limestone is used in the plant WFGD or "scrubber" system and is injected into the flue gas to help reduce Sulfur Dioxide, the key ingredient in Acid Rain. The byproduct from this process is synthetic Gypsum, which is sold to produce wallboard or Sheetrock as it is better known. It is loaded onto trucks and taken to a wallboard plant near Mount Holly, NC. The blue center cab unit in the foreground is the plant's Peoria Locomotive Works PLD110 switcher. It was damaged last year and is no longer used.
