Remarks & Notes
A long eastbound train rounds Tanglefoot curve east of Cumbres. Tanglefoot may or may not have been a term used by the railroaders, it does not appear in any timetables or special instructions, but was and is common among fans of the DRGW. Much photographic coverage of Cumbres focused on the dramatic two engine "Cumbres Turns" that shuttled cuts of cars up the 4 percent grade from Chama to the top. Eastbound from Cumbres cars would be assembled into long trains up to 70 cars that could be handled down the mostly 1.42 percent descending grade to Antonito and Alamosa with only one engine. The drama here was the long trains wrapped around the sweeping curves that characterized the east side.

Rio Grande Narrow Gauge in the 60's

The DRGW narrow gauge was the last major steam operation in the U.S. The climb over 10,000 foot Cumbres pass was spectacular, with two engines handling 70 car trains. Hopefully these images convey some of the drama of mountain steam railroading.
