Not much of a reflection shot today..... Although the calendar says it is technically spring, there's still a skim of ice on the pond just north of Davis Curve, and some snow here and there in the wooded areas as a WW&F Freight makes its way south to Wiscasset on a dreary day in March.
Some might think it odd that the Turner Centre Dairy reefer car has a window in it. Even odder is the fact that it had a stove. This car typically had an attendant on board, and the window allowed him to keep track of the train's location and anticipate stops to pick up locally produced milk. During the warmer months, ice was carried on board in a bin, to keep the car cool. In the summer, the attendant job was probably a welcome relief from the heat. In the winter however, there was a real concern about the milk freezing, and a stove ensured that the car didn't get too cold. The comfort of the attendant was probably a secondary concern....at least for the railroad and the dairy.
