Remarks & Notes
Trading distance for elevation Southern Pacific's Civil Engineer William Hood was able to take his railroad out of the Caliente Valley and over the once thought insurmountable Tehachapis. In just 6 rails miles Hood's road climbed 700' in elevation leaving the floor of the Caliente Valley, the same distance as the crow flies was separated by 1 mile. Following the grade carved into Tehachapi's rolling hills in 1876, eastbound Union Pacific tonnage conforms to the Allard Horseshoe curve as it climbs through the Tehachapis.
