TRT-909 is a Track Renewal Train that can simultaneously replace both rails along with removing and replacing ties. It can install wood, concrete (as seen here), or steel ties while pulling and reclaiming spikes, and removing and collecting rail anchors. The machine is used in concert with a track gang to totally renew the track structure. Pictured in this view is the rear portion of the TRT that houses 525 h.p. diesel engine used driving the variable-flow hydraulic pumps for hydrostatic advance of the machine. It also contains a space for crew members operating the machine, along with other storage. In the background in Little Gore Canyon is a portion of the track gang following the TRT that begin surfacing the track. Behind them is a ballast train, more surfacing gangs, along with a welded rail train to pick up the old used rail deposited alongside the track by the TRT.
