Remarks & Notes
With any new merger comes the option of choosing a symbol to represent the new company, which is exactly what the newly created Norfolk Southern decided to do in 1982. A horse was chosen over the initial suggestion of an armadillo as the mascot for the new corporation since it better represented the strength of merging two historic railroad blood lines into one and the reliable service they would offer. Ads such as this: "From the championship heritage of two great railways comes the Norfolk Southern Corporation: The Thoroughbred", following the 1982 merger would cement the railroad's nickname as the "Thoroughbred of Transportation" from then on. For the next 20 years the NS corporate logo would remain unchanged until 2002 when the horse head was added into the familiar NS slanted typeface. Today the horse head logo looks great on the side of a freshly painted ex-BN SD40-2 the railroad recently acquired sitting in the middle of the A45 consist.
