Storming through Tamaqua. Reading & Northern Locomotive 425 charges past the historic station building in downtown Tamaqua, PA with an express passenger train destined for Jim Thorpe.
The classic station pictured here was built by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad back in 1874. During the first half of the 20th Century, it was quite the busy place, with several dozen trains stopping there daily. In the ensuing decades, as passenger traffic declined, the station fell into disuse and was threatened with demolition at one point. Fortunately, preservation groups stepped in and got the place listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was restored about 10 years ago, and in recent times has played host to a restaurant, visitor center and gift shop.
