It's a cool evening in early 1983, as a Seaboard System crew makes a transfer run to the NS yard to return a U23B and Southern caboose. The newly organized Seaboard System Railroad already had tee shirts made for their crews, and the railfan engineer and brakeman decided to wear their new Norfolk Southern caps to work this evening. The brakeman even acquired a lantern from the relatively-new NS. SCL SD45 number 2024 makes easy work of the short transfer move, but will lug a long string of pulpwood cars back to the SBD yard.
In reality: Steve Forrest poses as the "engineer" while "brakeman" Casey Thomason gives hand signals during an impromptu photo shoot at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum near Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Earlier in the day, the cosmetic restoration of the 20-cylinder beast was completed with the application of the lettering and logos. 2024 looks and runs great and will be used as needed at the Museum.
