A Kootenay Morning
The westbound Trail Hotshot glides down the gentle and beautiful Kootenay river a couple miles west of Nelson. This unique train runs once a day to service the smelter at Trail, the fertilizer plant at Warfield, and the pulp mill and sawmill at Castlegar. This is the last remaining portion of the Boundary subdivision, which once ran to Midway, BC, and onward to the coast as the second mainline of CP. With the improvement of highways, much of this is now abandoned.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
