An early morning in the Sierra finds BNSF's eastbound Stockton, CA to Provo, UT trackage rights train dropping down the eastern slope of UP's Roseville Subdivision and into Truckee. Although its roll has greatly diminished over the years from being a division point and helper base, Truckee is still a railroad town and home base for Union Pacific's snow fighters, who keep the Donner line open to revenue despite winter's worst intentions. After a long day in the snow the shops and restaurants in Truckee's historic old town district, which line the north side of the former SP tracks through town, offer a welcome relief from the cold.
