Sumpter Valley Sunrise. The first golden rays of sunlight stream across the Powder River Valley in tiny McEwen, Oregon, finding the Sumpter Valley Railroad's two steamers sitting at McEwen Depot, all fired up and ready for a day of spectacular photography.
Every year in October, the Sumpter Valley Railroad hosts a Fall Photo Train weekend...two days of narrow gauge steam railroading with some of the most photogenic railroaders you'll ever see. Both of the line's steam engines are typically in operation, and with the great selection of rolling stock at the SVRy, the trains look a bit different every year. If you love photographing the narrow gauge, mark your calendar and take a heading for McEwen, Oregon next October.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
