Over six hours before this photo was taken, we were standing on a hill near Bealville waiting for this heavy Roseville, Calif. to West Colton, Calif. manifest to make the climb over the famous Tehachapi Pass. We were able to see the train pass Ilmon, letting us know we would be able to see him soon. Well, the middle helper set on this train had different plans. They decided to stop working, thus causing the train to stop at Caliente. They spend the next two hours trying to fix that problem. Once that was fix they, were ready to go; until the second unit wouldn't load. After several hours of working with that unit, they finally called out a helper unit from Bakersfield to rescue the down train. Now, the sun light is nearly gone but they're ready to go. With a new crew on board, this 100 car manifest train begins to notch up and slowly move so it can tackle the pass.
Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
